Brakes

Obviously if you are going to be going faster, stopping quicker is particularly important. Quite a few of the standard Volkswagen group components are interchangeable, with the only limiting factors being the PCD of the hubs and ultimately if they fit behind your wheels!

Corrado

4 Stud

  • Stock 16v 256mm
  • Stock G60 280mm discs with G60/VR6 Calipers - Girling 54 caliper, single pot
  • Stock G60 280mm discs with S2 Calipers - Girling 60 caliper, twin pot
  • Uprated Mk3 VR 288mm calipers with 305mm Leon 4-stud discs (Possibly requires different carriers)
  • Uprated Seat Leon 305mm discs with Brembo calipers
  • 5 Stud

  • Stock VR6 280mm
  • Uprated Mk3 VR 288mm calipers with Mk3 288mm discs (A great improvement on stock)
  • Uprated Audi TT 312mm calipers with Audi 312mm discs
  • Corrado rear calipers are notoriously susceptible to seizing, so a good fix for this is to replace them with Mk4 Golf GTI rear calipers. They are make from aluminium, so firstly they are not going to rust, but also they are lighter. They require different rear brake lines as they use banjo style fittings, but Goodrich do braided items that do the job nicely. I found C&R Enterprises was the best place to get these from.

    Golf

    Mk1

  • Stock 239mm
  • Uprated 256mm Mk2 calipers and discs
  • Uprated 280mm Stock Corrado G60 calipers and discs. There is a kit available from the administrator of the www.VWCaddy.com forum
  • Uprated 285mm discs with standard calipers. These are available as a kit using Black Diamond discs. It is also possible to use Rover 800 front discs which are 285mm, and re-drill the holes for the wheel bolts. It is a far cheaper way of getting HUGE brakes on a Mk1.
  • Mk2 Golf 16v master cylinder is another way to improve the brakes giving much better hydraulic force to the caliper. N.B. Fitting the master cylinder will require a different dizzy cap (if retaining the dizzy on the 16v motor) and the standard one fouls on the larger master cylinder. A Fiat X19 dizzy will do the job, as the HT leads come out of it at right angles.
  • Mk2

  • Stock 16v 256mm
  • Uprated Corrado G60/VR 280mm
  • As the Corrado shares the same rear brakes the Mk2 Golf also suffers from the seizing issue.

    Mk3

  • Stock 288mm VR6 calipers
  • Uprated Audi TT 312mm calipers with Audi 312mm discs
  • Aftermarket manufacturers

  • AP Racing
  • Willwood Superlites
