16vT Stock Blocks

There are a few stock Volkswagen engines that can be used for a base for a 16v turbo engine. They come in two sizes; the tall block and the short block. The short blocks were the earlier of the 16v engines and the tall blocks were the later ones.

Tall Block

236mm high with 159mm long rods, in the form of a 2 litre 16v and 2 litre 8v

ABF 1984cc

  • 92.8mm stroke
  • 82.5mm bore
  • comes with 60-2 trigger wheels on its crankshaft, while standard blocks use camshaft triggering mechanisms
  • 2E/ABA 8v 1984cc

The 8v block can be used as a base for a 16v turbo. It is possible to put a 16v head (from 9A/6A/KR/PL) to the 8v block which results in a compression ratio of 8:1. This is discussed here.

  • 92.8mm stroke
  • 82.5mm bore
  • no trigger wheel
  • Both engines have the same con-rods

  • Rod length: 159mm
  • Big end bore: 50.6mm
  • Big end width: 24.9mm
  • Pin diameter: 21mm
  • Small end width: 24.9mm
  • Short Block

220mm high, with 2 different capacities:

    KR/PL 1784cc

  • 86.4mm stroke
  • 81mm bore
  • 9A/6A 1984cc

  • 92.8mm stroke
  • 82.5mm bore

  • All short blocks have the same con-rods
  • Rod length: 144mm
  • Big end bore: 50.6mm
  • Big end width: 24.9mm
  • Pin diameter: 20mm
  • Small end width: 24.9mm
